The Rarity of Hand-Reeled Silk

Silk begins in water, heat, and patience, but it survives only through human judgment. Our silk is hand-reeled, cocoon by cocoon, by a single family whose knowledge has never been mechanized. Each filament is guided slowly by eye and hand, without industrial tension systems or chemical finishing. What emerges is a continuous, living thread, luminous, resilient, and worthy of weaving.

Silk

Hand-reeling silk at this level relies on human sensitivity rather than mechanical control. Filament count, tension, and consistency are governed by touch and adjusted continuously to maintain uniform thread structure, without chemical intervention. The resulting silk retains its natural tensile strength, resists breakdown over time, and wears without pilling or fraying. Any variation in the thread is intentional, not accidental. A decision made by expert hands, not a limitation of the process.

Our silk partners are based in southeastern Türkiye, where a legacy of small-batch silk work has endured despite profound disruption following the 2023 earthquakes. Though production has been temporarily paused, the knowledge remains and we remain committed to its revival.

Integrity of Fibre
Silk fibres valued for their natural strength, flexibility, exceptional tensile structure, and long filament length.

Clarity of Process
Reeled or spun by hand, prepared to maintain strength, continuity, and control on the loom.

Enduring Use
Adapting naturally to body temperature, becoming more supple over time while retaining its strength.
